Spring Lily Growth

Our spring sale was an outstanding success! We sold out and made a good profit. Thanks so much to the members that participated and especially Kim who pulled it together and made things happen. It seemed like we had greater public participation than usual. The why of it could be the great weather both days, but we think the new hourly lily arrangement free drawing was a big helper.

We got our new bulbs in the ground quickly. What a spring this is. The lilies in our garden are a month early and growing like weeds. So far no damage from varmints! We’ve been busy mulching and weeding. If this keeps up, the show should be spectacular with a variety of healthy stems of all types. Plan on participating both days. Call Bob Snider, 314-487-5321, to plan your help. Also, if you have unusual specimens, bring them in and we will feature them in the educational exhibit.

Our mini-show will be Saturday, July 17th at the home of Fred and Jean Winterowd. Hold that date, they have an eclectic ever changing and improving garden that is a must to see.

MARLS was selected to participate in a free evaluation of Zabo Plant Inc. garden lily bulbs. Zabo is headquartered in the Netherlands and via their North American outlet Zabo Plant Inc., located in Pittsburgh, are bulb suppliers to professional lily growers here. Members with room have received bulbs to plant and will report their progress. A partial listing of the bulbs will be added to the web site shortly.

A final word. This time of year we visit the garden shops etc. for supplies and annuals. At Lowes and Home Depot, and maybe others, they sell potted lilies, mostly Asiatics, for prices like $7 and up. Our sales offer great bargains! Not to mention terrific variety.
