Growing Lilies From Seed: Tips and Tricks

Lilies Grown from Seed

The Mid America Regional Lily Society (MARLS) was honored that Dennis Fitzgibbons agreed to give the 2010 educational presentation about one of his passions, Growing Lilies From Seed.

This year's Spring Educational Session focused on why grow Lilies from seed, types of seed germination and preparation, also types of containers and best growing mixes. Dennis then covered the different types of lights, fungicides, and how often to water. Lastly he discussed how to get blooming size bulbs in 12 months.

The North American Lily Society operates a seed exchange for members, offering seed from hybrid and species lilies. This exchange provides members with an opportunity to obtain rare and unusual seed that is impossible to procure elsewhere. All seed is donated by members, and is sold at a nominal cost to defray expenses. Please click HERE for the list of seeds available at the 2010 North American Seed Exchange.

After the break, Fred Winterowd demonstrated the finer points of potting lily bulbs, proper soil and placement of lilies in your landscape. Each meeting attendee took home a lily bulb potted up and ready to go.

Our seminar was held in the Beaumont Room at the Missouri Botanical Garden on March 13th and was free and open to the public.
